Our foundation degree in Software Engineering will give you the skills you need to enjoy an exciting career in this rapidly growing industry.

We’ll prepare you for a successful career developing software solutions in a variety of areas such as computer networking, security, image and signal processing, embedded real-time development, web, applications, graphics, mobile devices and games.

You’ll develop skills in creating software and digital systems as well as exploring modern approaches to project management, teamwork and interaction with clients, users and managers.

What you'll do

You’ll develop programming and analysis skills and an understanding of computer and network technology.
Apply your software development skills to the challenge of developing interactive games using 3D graphics.
Learn to program effectively in Java, C++, and C#, use leading database management systems, study communications and networks, and apply project management skills.

Modules

Compulsory modules

These modules are set and you have to study these as part of your course.

In this module you'll explore the fundamentals of computer architecture and operating systems, exploring the nature and consequences of security threats and data breaches, as well as countermeasures. You'll examine the legal, ethical and privacy issues associated with collected data and discuss issues arising with emerging technologies such as smart cities, smart vehicles, the Internet of Things (IoT) and online shopping.

After completing this course you’ll have the opportunity to progress to our full Software Engineering, BSc (Hons) course.

Graduates from our BSc course have gone on to work for some of the world’s biggest companies in the digital sector, including EA Games, GCHQ, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel and Nokia.

We are an Educational Member of the British Computer Society providing benefits to our students such a free BCS membership for the duration of their Computer Science course. This help connections with the tech industry through BCS mentors, enables access to bespoke events with industry experts, as well as interactive career tools include CV writer, interview simulator, personal assessments and e-learning.

You’ll benefit from being taught by staff who are experts in their fields. Members of our course team have developed software commercially and managed teams of developers.

Throughout this course you’ll attend a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions. Independent study is an important aspect of this course.

We emphasise practical-based learning using purpose-built laboratories and the University's general computer rooms. Our laboratories allow you to use specialist software and do things that would not be allowed on a public network (for example, configuring networks or database servers, or testing system security).

You will use a range of development environments and tools. Where possible, we make software available for use on your own PC.

During your first year you’ll study the same modules as students on our other computing courses. This gives you the flexibility to transfer to one of our other specialist courses if you would like to. These include Computer Networks and Security, Computer Games Development and BSc (Hons) Computing.

Much of the assessment is based around developing software or IT systems to ensure that you have the practical skills you require in industry. We’ll also use exams and reports to ensure that you have understood the theory learned.

A key feature of this programme is the second year team project, which will help you to develop techniques which can be applied to industrial system development.

In addition to this highly technical programme, there are other opportunities to enhance your skills and boost your employment prospects during your time at University. These include industry placements, a Young Leaders programme, and a three-day leadership training programme which takes place in Cyprus.
