Kelly reflects on how studying close to home at partner Wigan & Leigh College helped her thrive

Kelly discusses how studying the FdA Children, Young People and Their Services at Wigan & Leigh College helped her grow both personally and professionally while balancing the demands of family and work.

“Studying the FdA Children, Young People, and Their Services at Wigan & Leigh College through UCLan has been an eye-opening and enriching experience. The convenience of being able to study just five minutes from home was invaluable, especially as a parent managing family, work, and studies. The course has transformed the way I think, teaching me to question things, evaluate perspectives, and see the positives and negatives in new ways.

One of the highlights was our trip to Amsterdam, where we explored global equalities and learned about cultural and historical contexts, which included the evolution of Amsterdam’s social landscape. It was an unforgettable experience that brought our learning to life.

The facilities at Wigan & Leigh College were excellent, with access to computers, laptops, and one-on-one support from tutors who were always approachable and understanding. Their guidance and encouragement, along with UCLan’s resources, helped me realise my potential. The programme has opened doors I never imagined, and I’ve even recommended it to others because of how much it’s positively impacted my life.

Balancing everything wasn’t easy, but with planning and determination, I received the result I wanted and am now preparing for my top-up year. I’m excited about the future, whether it’s pursuing a PGCE or working with young people in a teaching or tutoring role. This journey has been challenging but so rewarding, and I’m glad I took that first step."
