Quantity Surveying (Foundation Entry)

This module has been created to equip you with the information, skills and knowledge to help you succeed in your chosen route of academic study in engineering. 

You will get an introduction to two-dimensional and three-dimensional computer aided design tools. You will be introduced to system analysis and solutions using MATLAB whilst developing your personal transferable skills. You'll develop the ability to understand engineering design tools which will support the foundation year and subsequent year of study in your chosen route into engineering.

The module will introduce methods of communication and presentation for design concepts. You will develop drafting skills and the ability to solve design problems, which will help with the transition to degree level study.

This module will develop your analytical skills and utilise a variety of qualitative mathematical skills necessary for your studies at the School of Engineering

This module is designed to help you develop and reinforce basic mathematical skills needed for study in science, engineering, and computing subjects. Emphasis will be placed on building confidence and competence in a range of mathematical skills that are used in real-world problems.

This module introduces you to the principles of the construction methods used in, low rise construction in the UK. You'll look into the properties of materials used in construction.

This module aims to review key environmental and service requirements for building services systems in buildings. You'll examine design principles, analyse technical performance, and select components for utility services.

The module aims to introduce you to basic economic and management principles applied to construction.

This module will provide you with an introduction to the English Legal systems and the principles of legal reasoning applicable to precedent and statutory interpretation. It will help you gain an understanding of the settlement of disputes through the court structure, and the legal principles considered will be applied, particularly to the construction industry.

This module will consider the provision of construction knowledge necessary to develop a greater awareness of the technology involved in the construction of framed buildings and multi-storey developments including a focus on material technology and structural analysis.

On this module you'll become critically aware of the cost implications of resource allocation in construction procurement. You'll look at the factors involved in the identification and pricing of construction work both at the tender stage and during the construction period.

The module aims to examine the contractual provisions which govern the administration and management of construction and engineering projects.

You'll receive an introduction to project management systems, through identification, co-ordination, integration and analysis of construction project resources. You'll investigate sustainable and safe approaches to construction in the planning and management of site activities and resources.

You will develop key competencies in the preparation of project documentation for construction projects, including the quantification of commercial projects using the rules of measurement. You will develop IT skills through the implementation of appropriate software packages.

This module is designed to develop your professional Quantity Surveying skills, you'll be introduced to the range of functions of the Quantity Surveyor. You'll develop analytical and problem solving skills in relation to realistic scenarios which allow you to function as the member of a multi disciplinary team in the workplace.

This module will focus on the role and responsibilities of becoming a project manager. You will learn leadership and organisation skills essential to the role and understand the range of operational activities including analytical monitoring and controlling techniques.

Analyse and appraise systems of financial management within the Construction Industry. This includes the compilation and assessment of claims, budgets and costing systems. Learn how construction performance can be planned, monitored and evaluated within an economic framework.

This module is designed to acquaint you with the overall concept of “a project” by considering its phases and constituent parts from inception to completion. The analysis and appraisal of the project will be considered in relation to the four aspects of Whole Life-Cycle Appraisal: Project Design Appraisal, Project Value Appraisal, Project Cost Appraisal and Project Environmental Impact Appraisal and in relation to new-build, refurbishment and regeneration projects.

This module will give you an understanding of business management concepts and the legal framework that construction businesses operate within. You will learn about the business environment and legal issues relating to the construction industry. You will also understand the ethical responsibilities of a construction professional.

You will complete an independent study using theoretical, experimental or investigative analysis (or a combination of these). The nature of dissertation is to challenge you to produce original work as solutions will not be readily available.

Concepts of total facilities management will be introduced and explored in this module. This course will place an emphasis on the development of a managerial role for the Building Profession working within corporate environments.

The module enables you to develop specialist knowledge required for Quantity Surveying. The aim is to advance understanding of essential practice-relevant issues such as codes of professional conduct, ethics, and practice management fundamentals.
