Nursing with Registered Nurse (Learning Disabilities)

This module will give you a strong foundation in science, including anatomy, biology, physiology, psychology, pharmacology and the basics of pathology (symptoms recognition). You will learn about scientific language, medical terms, the foundations of life, and investigate the body's system.

This module will provide a foundation in academic skills, personal and professional development. You will develop an understanding of yourself, as well as higher education and concepts of learning. This will support your development as a nurse by instilling professionalism from the start.

The Simulated Practice Placement experience is an artificial representation of real-world practice. This will help you to develop knowledge of the fundamentals of nursing practice. This is in line with Future nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (NMC, 2018).

You'll learn about the needs of people with learning disabilities and autism across the lifespan, as well as the delivery of care. You'll also learn how to communicate and explore historical and contemporary perspectives on learning disability nursing.

You'll develop your nursing skills, professional values and competency within a practice placement. This will help you link theory to practice. You'll also have the opportunity to reflect on your learning, consider constructive feedback and identify areas to work on. You'll create a clear developmental agenda for future practice experiences. This will go towards the standards for Part 1 of the nursing programme (NMC 2018).

In this module, you will complete the theory and practice hours required for professional registration.

You will appreciate how contemporary political issues can impact health and social care from a local, national and global perspective. You will also understand your own influence on policy.

In this module, you will pursue your own line of study in an area of your choosing. You will develop reasoned arguments to defend, challenge and educate others on chosen contemporary issues or topics

You'll expand your knowledge, comprehension and application of the evidence relating to people with learning disabilities or autistic people. This will help you to deliver effective and holistic care that meets their needs.

You will develop your nursing skills, values and experience in a clinical placement. You'll engage in regular keeping in touch days, where you'll reflect on your practice and professional development. Input from Comensus will be applied to ensure patients and person-centred care is at the centre of what you do. This will meet the standards for Part 2 of the programme and those expected of the future Learning Disability Nurse.

The simulated practice placement provides experiential learning (NMC 2019) and builds on to the simulation experience from Part 1 of the programme. You'll develop nursing skills, values and proficiencies related to long-term and complex health conditions.

You will complete the theory and practice hours required for professional registration as a nurse.

You will develop a holistic skill set to help you succeed as a newly qualified nurse. You will explore your strengths, values, and growth areas, to create a mindset of continuous improvement. You'll undertake leadership training to enhance communication and collaboration skills. You'll also engage in immersive exercises to instil decision-making in complex scenarios.

You will critically explore and discuss contemporary evidence-based practice according to the existing literature. You will feel confident exploring academic literature and applying this to the people you're looking after. You'll also be confident applying evidence-based practice to inform clinical decision making.

The Simulated Practice Placement supports your development through experiential learning. You will develop leadership and management skills to prepare you to become a registered nurse. You will also demonstrate your numeracy and medicine management skills, in order to meet Future Nurse: Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (NMC, 2018).

You'll gain the knowledge and skills for advanced learning disability nursing. You will engage with the current learning disability nursing paradigm, and explore alternative explanations for behaviour. You'll also critically appraise evidence and use it to make informed decisions. You'll be equipped to take on nursing leadership roles in care delivery and management. This will be underpinned by service user and carer involvement, and compassionate person-centred care.

You'll develop nursing skills, values, and practice within the real-world practice placement. You'll have the opportunity to discuss the skills you've gained whilst on placement, and demonstrate your readiness to become a nurse. This will meet the standards for Part 3 of the programme and those expected for registration as a Learning Disability Nurse (NMC 2018).
