On our residential medicine summer school you will gain skills, insight and experience from our medical school staff and students.

Our medicine summer school is rich with skills, which will supplement your medical school application. You will receive practical training in basic life support, automated external defibrillator use, suturing and more. You will also complete mock interviews and receive feedback on your personal statement. This will give you the confidence you need for a successful application to our medicine courses.
Connect with aspiring medical students
During our medicine summer school, you will spend time at our Westlakes Campus. You will get the opportunity to build relationships with other students near the stunning Lake District. You'll help and learn from each other as you progress through the course. There will be plenty of social activities including a BBQ evening. There will also be an opportunity to visit our other campus sites.

What to expect from our Medicine Summer School
Our medicine summer school schedule includes the following sessions (subject to change):
- Physical examination
- Airways workshop
- Suturing and venepuncture workshop
- Basic life support (BLS) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training
- Introduction to anatomy and practical workshop
- Introduction to professionalism
- Communication skills with simulated patients
- Virtual patient scenarios using VR technology
- Personal statement advice and feedback
- Mock Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) and feedback session
- Visit to a Mountain Rescue Centre
- Evening guest lectures
- Hear from former UCLan medical student and qualified staff

Check out your accommodation
You will stay in Summergrove Hall whilst you attend the medicine summer school. This modern accommodation has its own gardens where you can relax in the evening. Take in views of the beautiful English countryside in all directions.
The halls are only a short walk from our Westlakes Campus. All rooms are single-occupancy and en-suite. Meals are included.
You will also spend time on our Preston and Burnley campuses. Details are yet to be confirmed but accommodation at Preston/Burnley will be on a self-catering basis.

Our picturesque Westlakes Campus is in the tranquil surroundings of West Cumbria, near Whitehaven. It's on the doorstep of England's Lake District National Park.

Our School of Medicine and Dentistry has been successfully training doctors since 2015. Each year we have 50 home places and over 200 places for international students on our Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme.
Our campuses
The School of Medicine has UK campus sites in Preston, Burnley and Westlakes, near the English Lake District National Park in Cumbria.
The Medicine Summer School will take place, predominantly, at our Westlakes Campus near Whitehaven, Cumbria with the opportunity to visit our other campus sites.

You will be expected to travel to and from the start and end point of Preston either independently or with assistance from a parent, a UK-based guardian or chaperone service. We will provide onward travel to Westlakes Campus as part of the programme as well as return travel back to Preston.
Preston has excellent transport links to Manchester International Airport via road and rail links. The fee does not include travel to and from the UCLan Preston Campus.
All applicants must
- Be in their 12th or 13th year of education (e.g. 1st or 2nd year of A Level/IB)
- Be aged 16-18 for the duration of the summer school
- Be able to evidence a level of English language competency that will enable you to fully participate in the summer school, regardless of your nationality or country of residence. Equivalent to iGCSE Grade B / GCSE Grade 5, as a minimum.
Please note:
- Fees don't include spending money
- Private health/travel insurance is a condition of attendance (if you're an international student)
- Participants must secure their own travel visas if necessary and as required
UK-based guardian for under 18s
If you are under 18 at the start of the programme, your place is subject to the completion of the Under-18 Student Form with signatures from your parent/guardian and a nominated UK-based guardian.
Where the parents of an international student remain abroad, and there is no relative or family friend in the UK who can be appointed guardian by the student’s parents, the University requires that the student provide details of a guardian based in the UK. Preferably this should be someone who is in or near to the University. The guardian should be an adult who the University can contact in case of emergency and can act in loco parentis.
