One crucial decision that plays a big role in student life is where you choose to live.
I began looking through accommodation options and decided on the one that was best suited for me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t meet the accommodation deadline and had to resort to other options. As an international student, I wasn’t familiar with UK’s accommodation system, but the university made it easier for me with its list of registered private accommodations. This helped me get accommodation that is 5 minutes’ walk to campus.
From fostering academic success to promoting a healthier lifestyle, there are several benefits to living near campus that go well beyond convenience. Here are some of the benefits I have personally enjoyed:
Time efficiency and reduced stress
This is one of the obvious benefits of living close to campus. It has helped me build a more flexible schedule and given me greater control over my daily routine. I get to save extra time, enjoy peace of mind, and reduce my stress level knowing I don’t have to worry about train strikes or bad weather affecting my class attendance. I’m also able to use the gym facilities on campus and build a healthier lifestyle.
Lower transportation costs and financial planning
By simply walking to school, I have been able to save on transportation expenses and allocate my resources efficiently. I am also able to meet other essential needs as well as maintain a flexible budget and increase financial planning.
Enhanced academic performance
This has to be a top benefit for me because I get to have quality sleep as I do not have to worry about commuting. Quality sleep helps me concentrate better and actively participate in classes. Recently, I had an assessment I really needed to complete so I could focus on other things. I walked into the library by 6pm after classes and returned home by 8pm. Being able to access academic resources fosters a conducive learning environment that could further improve your grades and overall academic success.
Social networking
Living close to campus has afforded me the opportunity to participate in events and extracurricular activities. I can’t forget the team I worked with during my first ever gingerbread decorating event at Christmas! I’ve been able to build my social networking skills through establishing connections with other students.
Environmental benefit
Climate enthusiasts are going to love this one. This is an often-overlooked benefit, but it influences your wellbeing. Living close to school reduces air pollution and carbon emissions.
Overall, the sense of familiarity, community, and security I get living close to school, enables me to thrive. I hope these reasons have helped convinced you to find the best place for you to live near campus.
