Advancing a healthcare career with a Higher Apprenticeship

Balancing work at Blackpool Victoria Hospital with her studies, Cara is gaining the skills and confidence needed to achieve her dream career through our FdSc Assistant Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship.

Cara chose the degree apprenticeship route with us at the University of Central Lancashire to progress her career in healthcare and work towards her dream of becoming an Occupational Therapist. The combination of theory and practical learning appealed to Cara, who describes herself as a hands-on learner. “By completing an apprenticeship, I’m able to connect what I learn in the classroom to real-life practice. It’s been the perfect way to develop my skills while continuing to work.”

The two-year FdSc Assistant Practitioner - Higher Apprenticeship course combines one day a week on campus with on-the-job learning. Cara’s responsibilities at Blackpool Victoria Hospital have grown as her confidence and clinical reasoning have improved. She now manages her own caseload under supervision, attends daily board rounds, and provides a better service to her patients.

"The apprenticeship has been life-changing. I’ve gained so much knowledge and experience, and I feel like I’m making a real difference in my role."

Cara has found our facilities and support invaluable throughout her studies. “The library staff are so approachable, and the online library service is easy to use. WISER (the study skills service) has been brilliant too – I’ve booked sessions with skills coaches who helped me improve my grades and understand assignments better.” While balancing work and study can be challenging, Cara feels fully supported by her peers and teaching staff.

Once Cara completes her apprenticeship, she plans to apply for our BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy Degree Apprenticeship to continue her journey. Her advice for others considering a degree apprenticeship is clear: “Plan your time well and don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone’s learning journey is different. Most importantly, make time for yourself and enjoy the process!”
