We recognise that our diversity is our strength and work hard to ensure that equality, diversity, and inclusion are part of everything we do.

We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive environment. Where everybody is treated equally, has equality of opportunity and feels as though they belong within the University.

Strategies, policies and reports

The University of Central Lancashire is committed to delivering a welcoming and inclusive culture that promotes equality and values diversity within our community. We will provide a safe working, learning, and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all our colleagues and students are respected, and where they can be authentic, valued, and supported.

We are required to publish equality information annually, including gender pay gap information. Our annual equality reports detail the progress of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, objectives and action plan.

We also gather and report on a range of data to help us monitor the effects of policies, practices and activities on staff and students from all equality groups. This helps us identify and develop evidenced-based actions to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in every aspect of university life.

The Equality Act 2010 places a general duty upon public bodies to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advance equality of opportunity between people from different groups and foster good relations between people from different groups

We are expected to demonstrate our performance under the public sector equality duty in the following ways:

Information to demonstrate our compliance with the equality duty, at least annually.
One or more specific and measurable equality objectives.
That the above information is in a manner that is reasonably accessible to the public.

Athena Swan Applications

The Athena SWAN project aims to address issues around gender and diversity within Higher Education. It is an accreditation scheme administered by the Equality Challenge Unit. The University of Central Lancashire was awarded the Bronze status in April 2014 and had it renewed in 2019.

Equality colleague networks

We support an array of colleague groups and networks with the aim to promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within their specific areas of expertise. They provide support, signposting, networking opportunities and increase colleague awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion activities.

We’ve been awarded the maximum 5 QS Stars (Excellent) for inclusiveness (2022). We believe in helping people to seize every opportunity to flourish in education, at work and for life. Throughout our history we’ve always championed social mobility, working with underrepresented groups to ensure that everyone who has the potential to succeed at university is able to do so. Our 5 QS Stars reflects our pride in being a diverse, inclusive and multicultural institution which transforms people’s lives for the better. It reflects the outstanding support we provide to help students with disabilities, those with specific learning needs, people from low-income households, and others who need our help to overcome barriers which could prevent them from realising their potential. We ensure that nothing stands in the way of their success.
