  • When you graduate, you’ll be eligible to apply to Social Work England for registration as a social worker.
  • Our Social Work degree was developed in partnership with key stakeholders, including social work service users, carers, and representatives from social work agencies.
  • Gain international experience. Students have visited Amsterdam, Cyprus, Toronto and Krakow to learn about social work organisations.

Social work placements

On our BA (Hons) Social Work, you'll complete 170 days of practice:

  • First placement: 70 days (35 hours a week) starting in September of your second year
  • Final placement: 100 days (35 hours a week) starting in September of your third year

How to become a social worker

To become a social worker, you must have a degree, along with strong listening and communication skills, resilience, and creativity. When you graduate, you'll need to register with Social Work England or the relevant regulator in your area before applying for jobs.

Entry requirements

We will consider your educational achievements, predicted grades, work experience and personal statement. If you don't meet the grades for your chosen course, we will consider you for other programmes.

We know that many factors can influence the grades you achieve in school or college. If your life experience has affected your academic studies, we can take this into account. Use the UCAS Points Calculator below to check whether you are eligible.

  • UCAS: 120 points at A2
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: DDM
  • Pass Access Course: 120 UCAS points
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass including 120 points from Higher Level Subjects
  • T Level: M
  • IELTS: 7.0 with no component lower than 6.5
  • GCSEs: 5 at grade C/4 including English or equivalent
  • Applicants will also need to be successful at an interview
  • A satisfactory Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland) and satisfactory Fitness to Practice assessment are required for this course.

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, this may include children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB).
