Adult nursing pathways and Return to Study course

Nursing

We want to make a career in nursing accessible to everyone. That’s why we offer two pathways on our BSc (Hons) Nursing with Registered Nurse (Adult) course, so that you can study with us in a way that suits you.

Study adult nursing at UCLan

Choose between two delivery modes: campus based delivery or a practice based delivery. If you don’t have the standard entry requirements for direct entry onto the course, you may be eligible for our six-week preparatory Return to Study programme. You can read more about this below.

Our practice based pathway is delivered in partnership with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Interested in a future career as a nurse? Discover the benefits, qualifications, and different routes you can take to become a nurse in the UK.

Which delivery mode is right for you?

Campus based
Start dates: April, September 2025
Delivered by the University of Central Lancashire.
You'll learn in blocks, with periods of on-campus teaching and clinical skills practice. Then you'll take part in clinical placement blocks at health care providers within your chosen placement circuit.

Practice based
Start dates: January, March, June, September 2025
Delivered by Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with The University of Central Lancashire.

On this pathway you'll have set weekly placement days alongside theory learning. The theory learning will take place through a combination of in-person delivery at Preston College. And you'll learn online through virtual platforms.

Your placement time will be spent at health care providers within one NHS trust from the list below:

Don't have the right qualifications?

If you don’t have formal Level 3 qualifications, such as A Levels or BTECs, our free Return to Study programme could be a great option. It’s also ideal if you’re considering returning to education after a long time. The programme is delivered online, part-time, over six weeks. Successful completion could lead directly to our adult nursing programme, subject to a successful interview.
