How to apply
We invite applications from talented individuals who are competing at a high level within their sport, as long as it is a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) sport BUCS Sports or para sport BUCS Para Sport (i.e. a sport at which universities compete). The criteria upon which these scholarships are considered are below.
All applicants are required to evidence how they meet the following criteria on the application form above – these criteria are primarily UK-based and are indicative of the levels rather than being definitive due to variations by sport and by country. Athletes from different countries may be required to provide specific statistical information and or performance footage to enable us to make a decision. It is not expected that players will necessarily meet all the criteria at any one level. Therefore, it is important that players use evidence in support of their application to indicate their ‘level’ of current performance (i.e. within the last 12 months) and their playing career to date. It is important to note that any applications that do not contain evidence to support their application will not be considered.
The sports scholarship programme is in high demand and it should be noted that places are limited, therefore it is recommended that applications are submitted as soon as you have received an offer from the University. The panel meet frequently to assess applications and provide timely decisions. It should be noted that with limited places available the selection process is based on the universities strategic priories and as such is a competitive process; meeting the criteria is not a guarantee of being awarded a Scholarship.

Eligibility and amount of scholarship
You are eligible for a sports scholarship if you are a UK or international student enrolled on a full time or part time (60 credits or more per year) undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University, studying at either the Preston, Burnley, Westlakes or Myerscough campuses.
Your offer email will set out the level of sports scholarship you have been awarded. The University may vary the terms of the scholarship (cash amount and/or support package) in subsequent academic years, and will notify you of any changes by 31 May of the previous academic year.
Part-time students will be awarded on a pro rata basis. If you have a professional contract that limits your ability to fulfil all playing and training commitments, the scholarship award will be reduced proportionate to availability.
The University has a limit of £5,500 that can be awarded to international students within an academic year. Therefore, international students who are in receipt of any admissions bursaries and/or scholarships will have the cash amount of the sports scholarship reduced accordingly so as to not exceed £5,500 in total bursaries and scholarships.
You are required to sign a university-student agreement to confirm your acceptance of the terms of the scholarship and these terms and conditions.

The award of a sports scholarship lasts for the duration (or remaining duration) of your course, subject to you making satisfactory progress in both your sporting and academic pursuits.
If you are suspended or interrupt your studies, payment of the scholarship will be suspended (see suspension or withdrawal of sports scholarship section).
If you subsequently enrol on a new course at a different level at the University you will have to re-apply for a new sports scholarship.
Payment
Payment of the cash element of the sports scholarship will be made in two or three instalments directly into your UCLan achieve account:
- Gold/silver – end of November, end of February, end of May
- Bronze – end of November, end of May
Academic criteria
You are required to fully engage with your academic programme of study, meeting the academic requirements of the course in-order to progress to the next academic year.
Your scholarship entitles you to academic flexibility around your performance needs, where this is practicable and permitted by the regulations applicable to your course. Any requests for flexibility should be discussed with the Performance Sport Manager in the first instance who will assess the eligibility of the request and support with the academic flexibility process.

You will be notified in writing of the panel’s decision.
You may appeal against the decision by writing to the Director of Sport within 5 working days of being notified of the panel’s decision. The Director of Sport will review the case and notify you of their decision within 10 working days. The decision of the Director of Sport is final.
