Civil Engineering

You'll develop solutions to geotechnical engineering problems through analysis and design. You will learn to apply principles of soil behaviour, including settlement, dewatering schemes, soil improvement techniques and landfill cells.

You'll learn how to use advanced numerical techniques to evaluate the mechanical response of civil engineering materials.

You'll undertake an independent piece of research in an appropriate academic area. The research may also form part of a vocationally focused work-related project. The dissertation can be based on documentary, field, numerical or laboratory research.

Apply your design skills to a complex building and civil engineering project in a multidisciplinary environment. You'll be able to contribute and articulate your expertise to interdisciplinary design strategies and problems.

This module will develop your ability to apply structural analysis in real life to determine the load paths of forces and their resulting deflections. You'll study reinforced concrete and steel as well as pre-stressed or post-tensioned concrete. You'll also study modern and composite materials and use structural design software's to aid your learning.

In this module, you will evaluate construction methods and approaches to adopting new technology to improve the production of buildings. You will extend your knowledge of sustainable practices and quality management principles. You will also analyse the production process, with emphasis on how technology and quality processes can improve this.

Gain insight into the principles, concepts and practice of water engineering and management. You'll cover a broad range of topics, which are explored through lectures, class discussions and exercises.

The aim of this module is to consider the requirements and applications of health, welfare and safety legislation relevant to construction, engineering and associated industries. You'll develop your understanding of health and safety and the development of systems and cultures. This will be taught with an emphasis on human factors and continuous improvement processes.

You'll focus on carbon management theory, policy, and practice. You'll identify, describe, and assess the scientific, ecological economical, and social implications of carbon management. You'll study the legislative and regulatory framework for reducing environmental impact. You'll also view potential contribution to the objectives of sustainable development.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the methods in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and its role in the 'life cycle thinking' of resource management.
