A University of Central Lancashire Professor has been awarded the distinguished suffix of RE (Royal Etcher) by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE).
Professor Peter Lloyd, Dean of the School of Arts and Media, has received this rare and prestigious accolade reserved for only 60 members of the Society, which operates under a Royal Charter with HRH King Charles as its patron.
The RE Society, which was established in 1880, is one of the world’s most prestigious printmaking organisations. Located next to the Tate Modern on the south banks of the River Thames, it hosts exhibitions showcasing expert printmaking from artists across the globe.
This recognition marks a significant milestone in Peter’s career, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to the field of art and printmaking.
"It is an immense privilege to be recognised as a Royal Etcher and to join a community of such distinguished artists."
— Professor Peter Lloyd
It also reflects his leadership and dedication to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusivity in the arts. Having previously been awarded the suffix ARE (Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers), Peter’s elevation to RE status highlights his exceptional artistic practice, his influence as a cultural leader, and his ongoing service to the society and the wider art community.
Peter, who trained at Winchester School of Art and then the Royal College of Art, is best known for his screen printed images of Mexican wrestlers. He has travelled extensively as a practitioner and academic and has seen his work displayed in public collections around the world.
Closer to home, Peter is the Chair of Trustees for Friends of the Harris Museum in Preston where he is working closely with Trustees and Harris staff as the museum looks to re-open in 2025.
As Co-Chair of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers' Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity board, Peter has been a driving force for change, advocating for greater representation and access within the arts. His commitment to these principles, combined with his creative excellence, has been central to his recognition as one of the most esteemed printmakers in the country.
"This accolade is a testament not only to my artistic practice but also to the importance of fostering equality, diversity, and inclusivity in the arts."

Peter’s elevation to RE status strengthens the University of Central Lancashire’s reputation as a hub for artistic excellence and reinforces the University’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in creative disciplines.
