Final year pharmacy students to provide health MOTs on Preston Campus

Free health MOT checks will once again be available at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in early November.

Members of the public can call into the Preston Campus where final year pharmacy students will be on hand to check height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels, as well as offering more general health advice.

The event, on Thursday 9 November, is part of the national Ask Your Pharmacist campaign, which this year seeks to highlight the roles of a community pharmacy.

Run by the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, the UCLan Ask your Pharmacist event will provide students with essential hands-on patient contact and benefit the local community at the same time.

"We want to build on [last year's success] by providing even more members of the community with a free health MOT and advice on where to seek further professional help if necessary"

Senior pharmacy lecturer Ann Urmston

Senior pharmacy lecturer Ann Urmston said: “Last year’s event was a big success and we want to build on that by providing even more members of the community with a free health MOT and advice on where to seek further professional help if necessary.

“All of our students are supervised by qualified staff and benefit greatly from the experience in preparation for their careers as pharmacists.”

Students on the second year of the course will run a health promotion stall at the event from 9.00am – 1.00pm, where people can ask for advice on healthy eating, vaccinations and ways to stop smoking.

The UCLan Ask your Pharmacist day will take place between 9.00am – 5.00pm on Thursday 9 November in the Foster Social Space.
