Want to be a speech and language therapist and help transform lives? Train on our BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy Degree Apprenticeship. Study for a professional qualification while working.

Our Degree Apprenticeship programme is delivered one day per week, either at our Preston Campus or online. You'll study and work alongside each other. This means you'll apply what you've learned to your workplace, linking theory to practice from day one.

We have strong links with speech and language therapists working throughout the North West and across the world. We work with the NHS, private practice, charitable organisations, and international institutions. So you’ll get opportunities to gain insights from the full range of modern practice.

You will also get to experience placements in different areas of speech and language therapy practice. This will help you decide where you want work in future. By the time you graduate you’ll have the skills you need to pursue a successful career in speech and language therapy.

Accreditation and approval

The course will be put forward for accreditation by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and approval by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Successful completion of this course then means you can apply for full membership to the CSP and registration with the HCPC.

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at those interested in a qualification within the healthcare or health education arena. Most speech and language therapists work alongside other health professionals and professionals allied to health. However, there is also an opportunity for those within the private sector and charities to benefit. You'll need to be in suitable employment to complete this course.

You'll recognise the diversity of the profession and the opportunities it provides. You'll be driven to learn and develop as a speech and language therapist. Alongside this, you'll apply knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to maintain professional standards.

What you'll do

The course will be put forward for accreditation by the RCSLT and approval from HCPC. Successful completion of the course will allow you to apply for full membership to the CSP and registration with the HCPC.

Develop the research skills needed to provide high-quality Speech and Language Therapy, guided by evidence. You’ll also be ready to make a real difference to the profession, advancing professional knowledge and best practice.

Subject to validation

Please note that this course is subject to validation which may result in changes to the course structure. Any changes as a result of the validation will be immediately included and highlighted in the course documentation. All students holding current offers will be given a comprehensive list of those changes.

Successful completion of this Degree Apprenticeship will lead to the eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC and membership of the RCSLT.

A qualification in speech and language therapy offers you a wide range of options in terms of where your career takes you. This might be working with children with speech or language difficulties, adults whose speech, swallowing or comprehension has been affected by a neurological diagnosis or other diseases or conditions. Speech and language therapists work in a variety of different settings, including hospitals, clinics and schools.

Our Degree Apprenticeship course will prepare you for a successful and rewarding career in the continually evolving health and social care sector.

Entry requirements

Your employer should ensure you have an enhanced DBS and occupational health clearance to study. They should provide you with an appropriate uniform. Your employer is also responsible for ensuring you are up to date with all mandatory training. Please note if your application is unsuccessful you cannot apply again in the same UCAS cycle.

The Degree Apprenticeship will be delivered either face to face on the Preston Campus or online. This is based on your geographical location and personal circumstances. The programme is a mixture of taught sessions, group discussions and workshops and on-the-job learning.

Assessments focus on ensuring you meet the the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the Degree Apprenticeship standard for speech and language therapists, and the HCPC standards of proficiency. We use a wide range of assessments including standard and innovative approaches like:

You will receive feedback in a timely manner, allowing you to feed this forward in your continued studies.

This is an integrated apprenticeship. This means the end point assessment is completion of all modules of the course and presentation of your results at the University’s Examination Board.

Information for employers

This innovative Degree Apprenticeship will allow your employees to learn alongside their work. They can study in the best way to suit their needs and the needs of your service.

This programme is designed to ensure learners meet the requirements of the Apprenticeship Standard for Speech and Language Therapists.

The course is delivered one day per week (20% off the job learning) for three years. This means the apprenticeship is completed in a shorter timeframe than the standard suggests is typical.

Learning for the apprentice builds year on year to allow them to be able to apply their learning into the workplace. They will become steadily more competent and able to take on tasks for the service.

This Degree Apprenticeship is delivered either in-person or online, depending on the individual needs of the learner.
You'll have flexibility over how you organise practice placements to fit with the workforce requirements and the provision of your service.

Funding band: maximum funding £26000

Funding bands range from £1,500 to £27,000 and sets the maximum amount of digital funds an employer who pays the levy can use towards an individual apprenticeship.
