My favourite things to do in Preston

Many people think it’s good to live in big cities in the UK, but I always like to live in small cities to have a peaceful life. My choice to be at UCLan fulfilled my dream, and I would like to share my top favourite things to do in Preston.

1. Visiting large parks and green spaces
I have explored the many parks and green spaces in Preston, including Moor Park, Avenham and Miller Park. My favourite park in Preston is Avenham and Miller Park as I think it is the ideal place for a peaceful walk; a large space filled with green trees and colourful flowers, landscaped alongside the River Ribble. It also includes the Japanese Rock Garden that is very exotic. Moreover, there is also a pond where you can sit and enjoy the peace around with a scenic view, as well as the Pavilion Café, which offers coffee, tea, refreshing drinks and some food.

2. Eating in Indian restaurants
If you are looking for authentic vegetarian Indian food that is tasty and at the same time is great value for money, then I would definitely recommend RK Dining. In my experience, this restaurant is pocket-friendly and serves delicious snacks and main Indian dishes. The restaurant only serves vegetarian food with some vegan options. The best part is you can get the festival’s special items in this restaurant; I bought Indian sweets on the occasion of Diwali. Eating the traditional festival dishes in a foreign country is bliss and worth trying for me. There is also another restaurant called Ranas spice which serves vegetarian Indian food.

3. Visiting Hindu temples
There are many temples in Preston. I went to the Gujarat Hindu Society and Community Centre in my free time, which I first went to at the festival of Navratri and played Garba with the Indian women. Their kindness and enthusiasm threw away my homesickness feeling. I always like to experience a peaceful environment especially when I feel stressed out. It is one of the largest temples in Lancashire; a well-maintained place of tranquillity where you can worship Lord Rama, Krishna, Ganesh, Durga Matha.

4. Enjoying nightlife
Preston offers a good nightlife with several bars and nightclubs that you can visit with your friends. I always like to capture pictures of roads and lights. I also like to go for a short walk after dinner, and I found Preston to be the best and safe place for this. If you don’t want to drink as part of our nightlife, there are plenty of places to go for alcohol-free entertainment, such as Level for Bowling and plenty of dessert places to eat.

Overall, it has been a great experience living in Preston, and the student-friendly environment is extremely supportive of living an economical lifestyle.
