Emma's experience accessing wellbeing support

Emma shares how she accessed wellbeing support at University including adjustments and assistance.

During my time at the University, I have been able to access support via various teams when I’ve needed them, the main one being the Wellbeing team. They were able to assist me with getting things in place such as Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) and exam adjustments, both of which were a huge help to me in my studies.

Over the last year, the team have still been on hand to support me and other students through online meetings via Microsoft Teams or by phone. It has been great to still have access to the same level of support, despite the pandemic.

Personally, I have found the fortnightly online meetings with my counsellor an advantage. It has meant that I have been able to receive the support I need from the comfort of my room, taking away any potential anxiety that travelling may bring.

I have also had the opportunity to attend online wellbeing sessions, ran weekly on Microsoft Teams. This has given me the chance to learn strategies to help with managing stress and getting good quality sleep. There have been further sessions on mindfulness weekly, which has been an ideal time to relax.

If you find yourself needing extra support at university, don’t be afraid to speak up. Whatever your issue, there is always somebody to advise and guide you. The support I’ve had throughout my studies has helped me gain confidence in myself and to complete my course, especially with additional challenges I have faced through the years.
