How Bethan has accessed support as a student

BSc (Hons), Professional Policing student, Bethan shares the support she has found at the University from financial to wellbeing.

I have been studying at UCLan for a number of years now and the support I’ve been able to access during both my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees has been a huge help to me, academically and personally. While I’ve always found support easy to access whenever I have needed it, the new Student Centre makes it even easier, as it acts like a central hub where all the services are under one roof.

During my time here, I’ve accessed academic support including study support sessions, which aid in referencing, as well as writing workshops which helped me to get up to speed on university study. I’ve also reached out to the Counselling team, as well as Wellbeing support, something I was initially hesitant to admit I needed at the time. However, upon talking to the team I felt immediately at ease and no longer worried about reaching out for help, as everything was so discreet and confidential. There was also a time following a bereavement I needed mitigating circumstances for my course work, something I was able to sort quickly.

During my postgraduate degree, I needed to access financial support. The advisors were excellent in helping me or signposting to relevant local and national resources available. Finance is a common concern with postgraduate students, however the one thing I would stress is people are there to help and you are not on your own.

Looking back, without the support available, I don’t think I would have been able to pursue my course and everything has been delivered in a fast and exceptional manner. My take home point for everyone is explore the support services available at UCLan, should you need them now or potentially in the future. Whatever you need, there will always be someone to help or point you in the right direction and utilizing all the resources available takes any extra pressure of being a student off you
