Tracey shares how the combination of supportive teaching staff, practical placements, and unique opportunities like a residential retreat helped her build a successful career and inspired her to continue her education.
"My experience at Preston College on the Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy FdA course was even better than I expected. The teaching staff were approachable and supportive, and the facilities were excellent. I especially enjoyed the residential trip to Whalley Abbey, which was a highlight early in the course—it helped our cohort connect and gel as a group.
The academic side of the programme was complemented by hands-on placements, where I gained invaluable experience and built a network through completing 100 hours of counselling at a local community counselling placement. The placement opportunities were well-organised by the college staff, making it a seamless part of the course.
The support from both Preston College and UCLan was exceptional, whether it was accessing resources like e-books and journals or getting help from the IT and student services teams.
To any new student, I’d say this: don’t just think about what the course offers during your studies; consider the doors it will open for you afterward. Thanks to this course, I have now started a private counselling practice, which is thriving—I could not be prouder. It’s also inspired me to continue my education with a top-up degree and eventually pursue a master’s. This has truly been a life-changing experience."
