Freshers week is approaching. Are you a student who doesn’t party or skips the drinks? Well I’ve got you covered with the best things to do in Preston that don’t involve alcohol.

1. Preston Marina

If you fancy some fresh air, then Preston Docks is the place to go. It's surrounded by numerous food places such as McDonalds, Costa, Ribble Pilot. While you are there, you could also catch a film at Odeon Cinema.

2. West View Leisure Centre

West view Leisure Centre has a bit of everything, including a gym, swimming pool and even a health suite. There is also a Football Centre that can be hired for you and your friends, which is perfect for making memories and bonding.

My personal favourite is the indoor 55 line climbing hall, which is fun to attempt with your friends and push your limits. Then head to the Grab and Go café that is perfect after a workout.

3. Avenham Park

Avenham Park is formed from a natural amphitheatre, giving it a unique shape and feel. Over time, features such as the Japanese gardens and water fountains have been added. This makes it a fascinating historical site and the perfect place for a afternoon walk.

The park also hosts numerous activities such as egg rolling, outdoor theatres and vintage fairs. If you enjoy sports and the outdoors then there is also the Park Run which takes place every Saturday morning. These events are a great way to socialise outside of university.

4. Laser quest

There is a laser quest located near Preston Bus station and in the heart of the town. It’s a great place for activities or birthday parties, if you’re looking for something a little different that doesn’t involve drinking.

5. Makers Market

The Preston Makers Market takes place at the Flag Market during the second Saturday of every month. It brings together the best of North Wests makers, bakers and creators. With numerous stalls to explore, there is something for everyone – especially if you are a foodie or collector. You won’t be disappointed!

6. Eat out

One thing Preston is not short of is a variety of restaurants. A meal at a fancy restaurant is a great excuse to get dressed up, without needing to drink. Some of my favourite restaurants are Cocos, Jaffas and Boo burgers, specialising in a range of cuisines.

There is also a lot of great street food places to try such as Spud Bros and Falafel Express.

Preston is home to a lot of great restaurants.

7. Dessert places

I believe you can never have too much dessert and Preston’s dessert selection proves that. It includes popular favourites such as Haute Dolci, Heavenly Desserts, Cube Desserts and Roccos Desserts, conveniently located right across the university.

8. Entertainment

We have Vue cinema, Odeon and soon to open in 2025, Animate cinema. The Animate cinema complex will feature a 16-lane bowling alley and gaming zone as well as food and drink stalls.
