Samiya discusses her amazing experience playing in the Netball Club and enjoying the atmosphere, the supporters, games and feeling supported by other players.
I have been participating in sports since a young age and to carry on this through school, college and university has been amazing in so many ways. Especially being a female from the BAME community, I have been a role model to others, showing them that in sport, there truly is a place for everyone.
As soon as I started at the University, I automatically took an interest in the Netball Club through UCLan Students’ Union, as this was my background. The netball club have both social sessions and competitive matches where we compete in the BUCS league against other universities. Every year for those wanting to represent the uni, the club provide structured trials to create teams for the upcoming season before training commences. Putting on my UCLan kit and being on court knowing that I am representing my uni gives me a sense of pride and honor.
It’s not all about competitiveness and matches, as there is so much more to being a part of a team. The social life is fantastic, with weekly themed socials every Wednesday which is a great team bonding experience. However, don’t worry if nightlife isn’t your scene, there are also socials throughout the year that don’t involve drinking. My personal favorite social is Christmas, where we get the chance to dress up and have a nice meal.
"Joining the Netball club has hands down been one of the best parts of my university experience. "

The club as a whole are a close-knit group of girls who support each other like a big family. One of the main benefits of being part of club or society is meeting new people and making friends for life. For me personally, playing sports helps me with my wellbeing and creates a safe space to destress and do something for myself.
Another benefit other than the obvious of keeping physically fit is the personal development and skills fostered through team sports such as communication, teamwork, self-esteem and a sense of community. Being part of the club has improved my confidence within myself, around others and within my sport performance. This is by seeing development in all aspects of training, games and the visible improvements to my play. Most importantly I know that my teammates and coach believe in me and I take this positive thinking into games.
The whole atmosphere, the supporters, the home and away games, it all adds to the amazing feeling you get when representing your university and yourself. I understand playing a sport is not for everyone or you may feel nervous about joining a sports club. My advice for you all is just do it, do it for yourself because you deserve to feel good. I have played alongside top athletes and brave people who were beginners in the sport and it is a joy to see people be active, socializing and being part of a team.
