What part-time work and support is available?

Going to university can be a big financial commitment. We know a lot of students work part-time to help fund their studies and social life. 

Work for the University

If you'd like to work for the University during your time here, you can apply to work part-time as a student ambassador or other similar role. It’s a fantastic way to meet other students and get involved in University life. You'll also help prospective students and their families find out more about what we offer.

You responsibilities could include:

  • Supporting tours and events
  • Writing blogs and content creation
  • Working as an Outreach Ambassador or Student Wellbeing Ambassador
  • Teaching a foreign language

Students' Union jobs

The Students' Union (SU) also have a range of student jobs available. This can include everything from working in the SU bar, to helping set up and run campus events.

These roles are part-time and flexible, designed to fit around your studies. They actively encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds, even if you don't match the job description perfectly. Most roles are confined to term-time.

Our Careers Team can help you with finding part-time work, paid placements and summer internships. Careers can also provide you with expert advice on planning for your future career.

Careers offer regular workshops and one-to-one appointments to help you:

You can also access a wealth of online resources. These include aptitude tests and complete CV solutions to the very latest vacancies at your fingertips.

There are daily Careers Drop-ins with the Careers Team at the Preston Campus, inside the Student Centre.

When you’re at University you can use our CareerEdge portal to search for local part-time job vacancies. You'll also find lots of useful content including e-learning modules and industry reports.

You can also download Handshake, the student and employer app. Download it from Google Play or the Apple Store. Here you'll see opportunities advertised by local companies who are interested in recruiting UCLan students.

Working in the UK as an international student

For those on a student visa, you will be allowed to work a maximum of 20-hours per week during term time. UKVI has defined a "week" as "a seven day period starting on a Monday and ending on a Sunday." 

Outside of official University term times, you are allowed to work full-time.
