Yvonne Halliwell

Yvonne shares the overall running of the Carlisle DEC - daily management, organisation and coordination to ensure smooth day-to-day function. Yvonne's recent distinction in her Academic Apprenticeship EPA has led to incorporation of more innovation into her teaching e.g. she was recently involved in developing an online version of the BDS Portfolio on OneNote and a workshop-based flexible method of teaching Special Care Dentistry. Yvonne supervises dental students at Carlisle DEC - she is passionate about ensuring the soft skills of dentistry, communication, self-awareness, organisation and a reflective approach run alongside development of sound clinical skills. She supports the students pastorally both in DEC and as 4th BDS Year Lead and Year Tutor.

Yvonne has had nearly 10 years experience in a busy NHS family general dental practice following graduation from Newcastle University in 1995. In 2005, Yvonne moved into the Community Dental Service where she thrived, becoming a BASCD examiner for the next 13 years, coordinating epidemiology, gaining her sedation qualification, DPDS and becoming a Senior Dental Officer in paediatric dentistry. She was also a VT trainer and Audit Lead. Yvonne was lead for paediatric dentistry across Cumbria and developed processes and procedures to ensure smooth running of services. This included provision of dental care for children under general anaesthetic and sedation. Yvonne is a member of the the BSPD, BSDH and NDPBRN. She gained her PGCAP through the Academic Apprenticeship route at UCLan in 2021, gaining a distinction in the EPA and becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
