Travis joined us in 2024 to contribute to teaching primarily on our Criminology and MSc Counterterrorism courses. He brings with him both the expertise of his work in counterterrorism, in addition to the unique perspective of someone with lived experience of violent extremism. Travis survived serious injuries sustained in the terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge in March 2017, an experience which underpins the very human realities of his work in counterterrorism.
Travis has published several op-eds in newspapers on the topics of support for victims of terrorism, and how best to counter the spread of violent extremism, in addition to being interviewed across a wide range of print, television, and radio media. In addition to this, he has delivered counter-extremism workshops to over 100,000 young people across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, and has presented his research at the United Nations General Assembly, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, and several national Parliaments.
Travis works closely with various government departments in a bid to improve practices in order to prevent future attacks, and support those affected. To this effect, he founded the Resilience in Unity Project in 2021, a social enterprise that gained the support of HRH The Countess of Wessex and General The Lord Dannatt, former Head of the British Army, amongst many others. The organisation empowers victims of terrorism to share their voices in order to combat the misinformation spread by extremists, and to raise awareness of the impacts of terrorism.
