Dr Subhrajyoti Saha
Subhrajyoti is a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics here specialising in Finite and Computational Group Theory. He is affiliated with the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute here at UCLan. Previously, he worked at the University of Liverpool, where he contributed to teaching and student engagement initiatives in mathematics. Subhrajyoti is also a Fellow of AdvanceHE, formerly known as the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
As a Lecturer at the School of Engineering and Computing, Subhrajyoti teaches various algebra modules. His research primarily focuses on the classification of finite p-groups through coclass theory and exploring the structure of finite abelian groups via element orders.
Subhrajyoti's academic career, which began with earning his PhD in Mathematics from Monash University in Australia, has been marked by significant achievements and roles in higher education. As of 2024, he serves as a Lecturer in Pure Mathematics with us focusing on both teaching and research in the field.
In 2023, Subhrajyoti was honoured with the Learning, Teaching, and Student Experience Awards by the University of Liverpool for his contributions to improving the educational experience for students. This accolade included an educational grant that supported his ongoing projects in academic development.
During his tenure from 2022 to 2024 as a University Teacher at the University of Liverpool, he was also a member of the Mathematics Centre for Enhancement in Education (MathsCEE). This role involved collaborative efforts to advance teaching practices and enhance the educational landscape within the mathematics department.
In 2020, Subhrajyoti received the Postgraduate Publication (PPA) Award from the Faculty of Science at Monash University. This award recognized his contributions to academic publications during his doctoral studies.
Earlier, in 2016, he was a recipient of the Research Training Programme (RTP) scholarship, awarded by the Australian Government to support his research in Australia. This scholarship, aimed at high-achieving international students, facilitated his research endeavours leading up to his PhD
This narrative of Subhrajyoti's professional journey illustrates his ongoing commitment to enhancing mathematics education and his active involvement in both academic and educational advancements within the field.

A finite p-group is a group whose order is a power of a prime p. The classification of finite p-groups by order is a difficult problem mainly because the number of groups (up to isomorphism) grows rapidly with order. Leedham-Green and Newman (1980) suggested to classify finite p-groups by another invariant called coclass; the coclass of finite p-group of order p^n and nilpotency class c is n - c. A useful feature of coclass is that finite p-groups of coclass r can be visualised by a graph (possible infinite). The vertices of this graph are the isomorphism types of finite p-groups of fixed of coclass and these graphs consist of interesting features like coclass trees, skeleton groups etc. Subhrajyoti’s primary research area lies in Coclass Theory for obtaining more insight into the structure of coclass trees and hence translate those results into the structure of finite groups.
