Rory Parkinson
Rory is a Lecturer in Healthcare Ethics & Sociology as Applied to Medicine and Healthcare. He teaches on a range of social and behavioural science subjects across the School of Medicine and Dentistry for our MBBS programme. Particularly, he teaches medical ethics in years one and two, and sociology in year three. He also works alongside our ethics committees, both at school level and centrally. He has interests in local and national health inequalities, social policy aligned to healthcare, and health education.
Rory is one of our leads for MBBS in year three for the Evidence Informed Practice of Medicine (EIPOM). He is highly focused on the impact of using patient narrative to support positive healthcare outcomes. Additionally, he is our International Medical School (Malaysia) direct entry lead. Here, he supports international students in the transition to year three of our MBBS. He also delivers on wider ethical subjects. This includes the ethics of remote patient monitoring and inequalities of wearable health technologies.
Rory is a Prestonian, born and bred, originating from Bamber Bridge, which is local to us. He completed his undergraduate degree in Criminology and Sociology, his PGCE, and Masters in Education all here, at the University of Central Lancashire.
He started teaching in 2011 at a local Preston college, after working within the health and social care sector for several years. He taught a range of health and social care courses to a large age range. At the college, he was the curriculum leader for Access to Higher Education and undergraduate Counselling and Psychotherapy programmes. He also led Social Policy modules for the Children and Young People’s Services, and modules on the PGCE/CertEd/FdE programmes.
He joined us in 2022 and has been teaching on the MBBS for phase one and two. Rory has a wealth of experience in dissertation supervision for research in multiple subject disciplines, curriculum design, and teaching, learning and assessment implementation. He has completed research on the impact of education policy on the motivation of teaching staff and completed research on the PREVENT strategies with education. In 2023 he joined the Behavioural and Social Sciences Teaching in Medicine (BeSST) network and has been working with them to support the Sociology curriculum within medical education.
