Dr Neil Walker
Neil teaches across a range of modules for our TESOL team at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His research interests lie within the fields of instructed second language acquisition and teacher education.
Neil organises an annual one-day symposium for CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL teacher educators called Super-Size your Cert. He is the course director for our Trinity teaching qualifications.
Neil’s research interests include: the distributed practice effect of L2 grammar; implicit and explicit learning and their interface; cross-situational language learning; individual cognitive differences and language learning; task-based language teaching and learning; novice teachers and the challenges they face.
Neil has had a varied language teaching and teacher training career. This has spanned many countries and different teaching and training contexts. These include teaching and training in China, Canada, UK, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, USA, Thailand and Algeria. He has taught EFL, ESOL, EAP, ESP and has taught on CELTAs, DELTAs and Trinity CertTESOLs, ICELTs. He has also designed bespoke training courses for in-service teachers. He has worked at language schools, training companies, FE colleges and universities. He has been working here since 2014.

Neil is particularly interested in the factors that influence the distribution of L2 grammar practice. These may include intentional and incidental learning conditions, declarative vs procedural tasks, and individual cognitive differences.
