Dr Nadiia Denhovska
Nadiia is a Lecturer in Developmental Cognition. Nadiia’s work focuses on language development, including second language acquisition and bilingual language development and processing. Her research concentrates primarily on mechanisms of language learning and cognitive factors contributing to language acquisition.
Nadiia has published articles and served as a reviewer in such journals as Language Learning, Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, Applied Psycholinguistics, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition; Language, Cognition and Neuroscience. In her current role she teaches on MSc and BSc in Child Development programmes and on a variety of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervises students, and conducts research primarily at the interconnection between language and cognition.
Before joining UCLan, Nadiia was a Fulbright fellow at California State University, Long Beach, USA, where she worked at the interface between Psychology and Linguistics and conducted research in Cognitive Linguistics. She then continued research in Psycholinguistics by working on her PhD exploring factors contributing to implicit learning of a second language at the University of Manchester, UK, where she also taught on Psycholinguistics, Language Acquisition and Research Methods modules. She conducted post-doctoral research on bilingual language processing with Dr. Ludovica Serratrice and Dr. Andrew Stewart at the University of Manchester. Since 2015 Nadiia is a Lecturer in Developmental Cognition at UCLan.

Nadiia’s research lies at the interface of language and cognition. It dwells upon the mechanisms of language acquisition and processing, with a particular focus on second language learners and bilingual speakers. Specifically, Nadiia is interested in implicit versus explicit learning of languages and cognitive factors contributing to language learning and bilingual language use. She is also interested in exploring implicit learning in atypically developing populations, such as children and adults with dyslexia and ASD. Nadiia investigates this by conducting comparative research on children and adults, speakers of different languages, typically and atypically developing populations. Her research brings together methodological approaches from psychology, linguistics and cognitive science. It employs experimental methods – eye-tracking, reaction times (E-Prime), EEG – and statistical modelling in R, for the data analysis.
