Dr Birch is a Senior Visiting Fellow in the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute for Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, engaged in solar-terrestrial physics research.
Dr Birch continues to publish research on the effects of solar particle events within geospace.
Dr Birch graduated from Durham University in 1974 with a degree in Applied Physics. After working for 10 years in the maritime and avionics industries, he joined us as Senior Lecturer, where he gained an MPhil in computing, an MSc (by research) in radio science, and a PhD in solar-terrestrial physics. Though now officially retired, Dr Birch remains on the staff as a Senior Visiting Fellow.
