Dr Hazel Dickinson
Hazel is a Senior Lecturer and the Course Leader for BSc (Hons) Adult Pre-Registration Nursing. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as postgraduate nursing courses. Hazel also has particular expertise in stroke care, with an interest in oral care in stroke patients. She is involved in stroke research projects and is a member of several forums relating to stroke. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Hazel's current role encompasses being the course leader for Adult pre-registration nursing. Working closely with the programme manager, other pre-registration course leaders, student services, work-based learning team, the pre-registration nursing team, other departments within the university and clinical partners to ensure a contemporary course is provided. The role involves supporting students and staff throughout the three years. Actively involved with the Stroke Research Team at UCLan.
Hazel commenced her nurse training at Sefton School of Health, Fazakerley Hospital, Liverpool in 1987. On qualifying she worked in elderly care and then specialised in Stroke Nursing, working on an acute stroke unit. She progressed to stroke specialist nurse in 1998. Throughout her nursing career, she has had an active involvement in Stroke nursing research and education. Hazel’s research activities span across the whole stroke pathway with a particular interest in oral care and Psychological adjustment after stroke. Hazel has been a member of the stroke nurses forum for many years. She was on the steering committee and has been involved in the development of the website for the National Stroke Nurses Forum and contributed to the development of programmes for national and regional conferences. Hazel is enthusiastic about supporting excellent nursing care and so has moved to pre-registration education to support students in developing their core competencies and skills. Her interest in research has enhanced her own clinical care and approach to the education of others. Hazel has completed a programme of studies for a postgraduate research degree (PhD). This programme of work used mixed methods to develop an oral assessment for use in stroke patients. Currently, Hazel is involved in COMMITS - COnfirming the Mechanism of Motivational Interviewing Therapy after Stroke (Funder: NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health and Care - North West Coast). Other research projects Hazel has been involved in are; LINCs oral flora project aiming to identify what oral flora are present in stroke patients. Since 2001 Hazel has worked on multiple research projects, including Motivational interviewing after stroke, Emergency Stroke Calls Obtaining Rapid Telephone Triage (ESCORTT) and InContence OptioNs after Stroke. (ICONS).
