Criteria for the awards
The University’s Academic Regulations state: “The PhD (by Portfolio) is awarded to a candidate who, having critically investigated and evaluated an approved topic resulting in an independent, significant and original contribution to knowledge and demonstrated an understanding of research methods appropriate to the chosen field, has presented a synoptic commentary and defended the Portfolio by oral examination, to the satisfaction of the examiners.”
How is a PhD by Portfolio constructed?
PhD by Portfolio invites retrospective ‘project work’ to constitute the thesis which may be drawn from the applicant’s professional and/or vocational background. The PhD by Portfolio will consist of 3 project areas which are ‘linked and distinct’, which are brought together; synthesised, through a synoptic report which is focused at a project title. The PhD thesis is constituted by evidence of all three projects plus the synoptic report.
PhD Thesis: 80,000 words equivalent in total incorporating:
- 15,000 word report of the whole PhD: a critical synthesis across all three project areas towards a conclusion of the doctoral research.
- Two linked and distinct project areas, indicatively 20,000 words each, each project combining retrospective evidence with current, critical reflection and discussion.
- Live project, 20,000 words, new data collection under ethics, methods and critical discussion.
It is anticipated that potential candidates for PhD by Portfolio will have a significant ‘professional biography’ to bring to this award to constitute the 3 project areas. To communicate this, the applicant is required to make a prima-facie case to embark upon the award which will be assessed before acceptance as a Postgraduate Research Student and subsequent registration/approval of the project.
