A University of Central Lancashire student who is the first in her family to go to university has been awarded a fully funded medicine scholarship.

Ammarah Patel, from Bolton, has received the Livesey Scholarship which will see her tuition fees paid for the duration of the five-year Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) degree course.

The 18-year-old received the award after successfully completing the UCLan Scholars Programme – Livesey Medicine Pathway, which was developed for help North West based students who are from backgrounds that are under-represented at universities.

Ammarah, who has just started her first year of studies at the University’s Preston Campus, said: “I was elated and beyond grateful to hear that I was chosen as this year's recipient of the Livesey Scholarship.

“As the first in my family to go to university, this scholarship means the world to me.

“It is a materialisation of all my hard work over the past few years to get to where I am today, and I will be eternally grateful to the University for this opportunity.”

Unlike many of her peers, the former Bolton Muslim Girls’ School and Runshaw College pupil wasn’t drawn to studying to become a medical doctor because of one specific reason.

She added: “It was really an accumulation of many things that made me realise that medicine is the best career path for me.

“It was the idea of getting to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, who are working in the best interest of patients, and having the opportunity to research different diseases in the future which really appealed to me.”
