This module will develop your ability to analyse a simple problem with a view to implementing a software solution. You will be provided with core skills in computer programming and debugging necessary to implement a readable and maintainable solution to a given problem. You will develop your software design skills and you'll be introduced to advanced programming techniques in preparation for study of an advanced programming module.

In this module you'll explore the fundamentals of computer architecture and operating systems, exploring the nature and consequences of security threats and data breaches, as well as countermeasures. You'll examine the legal, ethical and privacy issues associated with collected data and discuss issues arising with emerging technologies such as smart cities, smart vehicles, the Internet of Things (IoT) and online shopping.

On this module you will examine a range of vulnerabilities and attacks on computer systems and networks. You'll instil a vigilant attitude towards potential system weaknesses and develop an understanding of methods for protecting communication and computer systems. You will be encouraged to take a systematic approach to computer security and you'll integrate your skills by tackling the complex problem of system security.

This module will introduce you to information security, risk management and assessment standards. You will learn to select and use applicable standards and methods for information security and risk management. You will also compare and evaluate alternative information security management, risk assessment, and security assurance methods. You'll design and develop a security assurance, governance and risk management strategy considering and following the stakeholders’ requirements.

Pass Access Course: 112 UCAS points including 15 Level 3 credits in Maths

T Level: M including Maths
IELTS: 6.0 with no component lower than 5.5

We will also consider a non-standard entry route for applicants who do not meet the qualification requirements, but who have relevant work experience

Completing our Cyber Security Technician Degree Apprenticeship puts you at the forefront of the industry. You'll be qualified for roles such as Cyber Security Analyst, Information Security Manager, or Network Security Engineer.

The UK Government has identified that 50% of UK businesses have a basic skills gap. They lack staff with the technical skills to perform essential cyber security functions. 33% of businesses have more advanced skills gaps, such as incident response and security architecture.

This skills shortage translates into significant opportunities and strong job security for our graduates. By completing our Cyber Security Technician Degree Apprenticeship, you'll be well-positioned to fill these roles and contribute to protecting organisations across the UK.

You’ll be taught by staff from a wide variety of research and industrial backgrounds. Our researchers work in a range of computer-related areas.

Throughout this course you’ll attend a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions. Independent study is an important aspect of this course. You’ll have access to specialist computing labs featuring the latest open source and commercial tools relating to cyber security.

We emphasise practical-based learning using purpose-built laboratories and the University's general computer rooms. Our laboratories allow you to use specialist software and do things normally forbidden on a public network (for example, configuring networks, exploring computer viruses or testing system security). We use the specialist software utilised by the Police and other forensic investigators.

We’ll assess you using individual coursework assignments, group work, presentations and exams, which may be seen or unseen. There is a practical emphasis, with the main contribution to your degree classification coming from coursework.

Your end point assessment will involve the completion of 4 practical exercises. The first will evaluate your ability to design and secure a physical network and justify your approach taken. The second will assess your ability to carry out security tests on a network and justify the approach taken. The third will be a demonstration of your ability to monitor a network for cyber security threads and respond accordingly, justifying your approach taken. The final exercise will assess your defensive programming skills, where you will write a cyber security focused computer program aimed at defending against cyber security threats.
