English Language & Linguistics

This module provides you with a foundation in study skills by guiding you through the skills required to produce high quality academic work. Topics covered in the module include academic writing, referencing and critical analysis.

This interesting module will introduce you to critical thinking and discussion, and essential skills for success at university. A range of world issues and current affairs within broadly defined areas such as, political systems, environmentalism, law and justice, and culture and society, will be explored.

This module aims to develop your digital literacies. You'll have opportunities to focus on a topic within your intended honours degree (target award) Course. You will learn appropriate digital research skills, learn which digital tools and methods are suitable for your target award, and develop independent learning skills.

In this module you will explore group working, negotiating and task-based learning while building a reflective learning portfolio. You will choose a project to research, present your findings and exhibit your work as well as reflecting on your learning.

This module introduces you to English language and linguistics diversity and terminology across contexts, while also exploring key literary forms like poetry, fiction, and drama. It involves creative writing workshops and research, encompassing contemporary formats like short stories and scripts.

This module focuses on enhancing language learning processes, fostering reflective skills, and building research and presentation abilities. Additionally, it introduces Area Studies, promoting intercultural awareness and analysis.

This module provides insights into Education Studies and includes an introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). It aims to equip you with foundational knowledge for higher-level study by covering key debates, concepts, and policies.

This module offers an introduction to university-level humanities. It covers history, philosophy, politics, international relations, and religion. It addresses essential skills in working with evidence, forming arguments, and communication, mainly through applied ethics questions.

You’ll develop study skills for higher education. This includes using the library, critical reading, analysis of sources, and preparing written and oral work. You’ll learn about the style differences between between academic writing, creative writing, reflective writing, and the language of the workplace. You'll also learn about conventions for essay writing and referencing.

You'll understand how linguistic identities are formed and observed. You'll explore the relationship between language, gender and identity by analysing a variety of spoken and written texts. By the end of the module, you'll be able to illustrate how social identities are products of various discourses.

You will study language beyond the sentence, focusing on how communication shapes social interactions, identities, and power dynamics. You'll analyse texts, conversations and media to uncover the meanings, prejudice and attitudes hidden in language. This will help you to understand the impact language has on our society.

You will explore the relation between linguistic expressions, language users and contexts. Using a range of texts, you'll explore how speech acts, conceptual metaphor, and sentence forms impact how we interpret a text. You'll also learn about sentence structure, national curriculum grammar and grammar for writing.

You will use your own language experience to explore linguistic variation within society. This includes the contextual factors which cause variation. You’ll assess both the ‘language reflects society’ and ‘language constitutes society’ perspectives. You'll also learn the basics of phonetics and phonology to describe varieties of English, including your own accent.

You'll learn skills needed to engage with development and analysis of written work. This module aims to support you in your development of the academic skills required to succeed in your undergraduate studies. The module will address the range of research skills required for undergraduate success.

This module will develop your research and employability skill. You'll practice and apply a range of writing, employability and research skills. You will also work on projects and create a portfolio that demonstrates the skills, knowledge and experience they have developed.

You'll explore the language of different texts, including political speeches, advertisements, novels, plays, poems and more. You'll consider the ideologies, discourses, power structures and persuasive techniques they reveal. You'll also learn about linguistic framing, conceptual metaphor, and language and power.

You’ll explore questions about how language works. You'll learn about child language, and how we acquire and process language. You'll also look at how and why languages change over time. You will also learn about sentence structure and phonology, and how sound and structure interact with meaning.

The module will provide you with the opportunity to undertake an extended, independent study of a significant topic relating to your named qualification subject area.

The field of clinical linguistics studies disorders and delays of human language. You'll study different pathologies that affect language. This could include hearing loss, aphasias, Specific Language Impairment, Williams syndrome, autism, palsy, dementia, stuttering, dysarthria, and speech impediments. You'll learn about these disorders and their causes.

Apply your linguistic knowledge and engage with theoretical models of language. You'll learn about forensic linguistics, including authorship identification, police interview techniques and plagiarism detection. You'll also explore rhetoric and argumentation, including political discourses, modes of persuasion, argument schemes and practical reasoning. You will also look at contrastive and comparative grammars.

You’ll reflect on current approaches to teaching English in education and consider how important language is to educational success. You’ll critically examine education as a way to address or reinforce social inequalities. You’ll also engage with the Standard English debate and learn about key differences between non-standard varieties of English.
