BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy student, Shannon, explores the support she received accessing our Propeller Hub.
Students at UCLan have access to the Propeller Student Enterprise service, who can help your business ideas to ‘take off’ – just like they did with mine. I was helped in transforming my colourful mind-map scribbles into a professional 12 section business plan for a children’s sports academy with a twist.
I first heard about Propeller during a campus tour I went on before starting at the University. After I started, I was then invited to sign up to the ‘How to start a Business’ workshop series from UCLan’s internal communication emails. These sessions were amazing, they broke down the business plan into smaller, more manageable steps. Sessions involved fun activities to get you thinking about your business idea in a broader sense too. These sessions really helped me to define my business awareness, as well as think about my target audience and the optimal way to reach them.
As part of the service Propeller offers, I was able to have one-to-one mentoring. These sessions with my advisor allowed me to create a better pitch for my business that everyone could understand. They also helped me to find resources and external services I would need for things such as contracts and insurance.
Propeller not only helps with entrepreneurial skills but also workshops that can assist you with your studies and work life. Jetstream is a series of five workshops, held once a week for around an hour and a half. Sessions have involved topics such as mindset, resilience and negotiation. Upon competition, you receive certificates of participation, which can be added to your transcript after graduation.
My business idea started off as a passion driven extra-curricular activity but now thanks to Propeller, I know exactly how I am going to launch my business in the coming months. After graduation, my plans are to go travelling to explore new cultures and gain more work experience with sports teams that will benefit my business venture.
So if you’re looking into starting your own business or you need assistance to make your ideas a reality, I would highly recommend Propeller, as they really have set me and my business up for the future.
