MSc Financial Investigation
After gaining an MBA (Finance and Banking) from Lahore School of Economics in his native Pakistan, Ghulam joined UCLan in September 2019 to study MSc Financial Investigation on a Chevening Scholarship. Aside from his classes, Ghulam has immersed himself into life at UCLan and takes part in many activities from teaching Urdu to using the Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre and even exploring other parts of the UK.
"I came to UCLan because the course I was looking for is best available at UCLan and it’s the most relevant course to my work experience. The course is more focussed on learning through a lot of reading. There is less focus on exams and assessments, which is a good thing. British education is more research-based and hence enhances knowledge to a greater extent.
"We have had some guest speakers, who delivered very interesting lectures giving a real feel of their experiences working in relevant fields.
"My Tutors are extremely helpful, they encourage learning through interactive teaching lessons and the environment in class is very relaxed.
"My first impressions on arrival in Preston were that the University has excellent facilities and beautiful buildings with a very welcoming environment. There’s also a multi-ethnic and diversified student body.
"I make use of many student services and facilities, for example, I regularly use the gym which has excellent, state-of-the-art facilities and it’s free! I also visit the Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre – an excellent place to relax and meditate. The library is open 24/7 and has an extensive collection of books, journals and magazines. On the side of my Financial Investigation studies, I am doing an internship as a language assistant, where I get the opportunity to introduce my language (Urdu) and my culture to other students at the University.
"Preston is a place with the right mix of calmness and social activities. Away from studying I like to go to the gym, watch a movie in the Odeon or Vue cinema and go to the local parks. I live in private accommodation in a relatively new building with good facilities and easy access to the university. The nearby rail station connects to other cities which are very near to Preston, it feels like I live in the centre of the UK. So far, I have visited London, Blackpool, Birmingham, Lancaster, Manchester and Lake Windermere.
Preston has a very safe environment where people are generally very welcoming and friendly. I just wish it rained a bit less!
UCLan is a wonderful university where you can experience learning from the best tutors in a multi-cultural environment."
