During my first year at university, I struggled to manage my finances. I didn't have a clear understanding of where my money was going and often found myself running out of money before the end of the month. It was a stressful situation that left me feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.

Eventually, I decided to take control of my finances by creating a budget. I tracked my expenses for a month and identified areas where I could cut back on spending. For example, I realised that I was spending a significant amount of money on coffee and eating out. I made a conscious effort to cut back on these expenses by making my coffee at home and bringing my lunch to campus. I also started using the Notes app on my phone to help me track my expenses and monitor my progress. It was a learning process, but over time, I became more comfortable with managing my finances.

By implementing a few simple budget hacks, you can save money without sacrificing your quality of life. In this article, we'll explore five budget hacks for saving money whilst at uni.

1. Meal planning

One of the most significant expenses for students is food. Eating out or ordering takeaways can quickly drain your budget. Instead, plan your meals ahead of time and cook at home. You can save money by buying groceries in bulk and preparing meals in advance. Consider preparing your meals for the week on a Sunday, so you always have something to eat during the week.

2. Shop smart

Always look for deals and discounts when food shopping

When shopping for groceries, make sure to shop smart. Look for deals and discounts and buy in bulk where possible. You can also save money by buying supermarket-own brands instead of branded products. Don't be afraid to compare prices at different stores to find the best deals.

3. Use student discounts

As a student, you're entitled to a range of discounts on everything from food to clothing. Make sure to take advantage of these discounts by always carrying your student ID with you. Many shops, restaurants, and cinemas offer discounts to students, so it's worth checking before you buy anything.

4. Buy second-hand

Buying second-hand is an excellent way to save money whilst at uni. You can find great deals on everything from textbooks to clothing. Check out charity shops, second-hand bookstores, and online marketplaces like Vinted to find what you need. You can also sell items you no longer need to make some extra cash.

5. Save on entertainment

Entertainment can be a significant expense for students. However, there are many ways to save money whilst still having fun. Look for free or low-cost events in your local area, such as film screenings or live music. Consider sharing a Netflix account with friends or attending matinee showings at the cinema. You can also save money by hosting a dinner party or game night instead of going out to eat or drink.

In conclusion, saving money whilst at uni requires a bit of planning and creativity. By implementing these five budget hacks, you can reduce your expenses and save money without sacrificing your quality of life. Remember, every penny counts, so be mindful of your spending and always look for ways to save.
