Niomi Wilkinson
Niomi teaches across a range of subjects for our Counselling and Psychotherapy team. With expertise in Person Centred Experiential therapy, leadership in Mental Health Services and working with children and young people. Niomi has led collaborative projects with local authorities, changing the way we work with children and young people, taking therapy outdoors.
Niomi currently lectures on the UG, PG and MA Programmes, offering a range of Counselling and Psychotherapy modules. Niomi also teaches on the PG Therapeutic work with Children &Young People and the Person-Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression (IAPT). Niomi works across both the Burnley site and Preston site.
Niomi is the Deputy course leader for BS (hons) Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counselling course, Year 1 lead on the BS (hons) Coaching, Counselling and Psychological Therapies course and the Deputy Partnership Coordinator for ICPS Athens.
Niomi is focused on the School's activities in the development of Counselling and Psychological Therapies, contributing to the development, delivery, assessment and evaluation of a large portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD courses.
Niomi started her career in social Work. Niomi then moved on to work in the Probation Service, initially at Preston Crown Court for many years before gaining a post as Lancashire’s Women’s Safety Office (WSO). Working in partnership with the police, women’s aid and attending regular MARAC meeting at Hutton Police HQ, gaining years of experience working with domestic abuse.
Niomi returned to education to train as Psychotherapist, leading to her now being a BACP accredited Psychotherapist. Successful at managing multiple priorities while maintaining a strong work ethic and exhibiting a positive attitude. With over 10 years’ experience in offering therapy for children, adolescents and adults dealing with a range of issues.
Niomi is a compassionate, Person Centred Experiential, Solutions-orientated Counsellor, dedicated to providing exceptional care. Niomi has years of experience working in the NHS, charity organisations and private practice. Niomi moved onto management as well as still holding a case load within the NHS, with a desire to improve access to therapy for those hard to reach clients, gaining several years’ experience in managing a counselling team within the NHS.
A Psychotherapist with skills in leading situation-specific counselling sessions around Walk and Talk Counselling. Niomi led and developed a team within the NHS, co-produced with Blackpool council and many young people in Blackpool, in taking therapy outdoors. Delivering training to a range of professionals across the country in therapeutic work outdoors. Niomi appeared on BBC news and Granada News, following an interview on Walk and Talk counselling.
Niomi has expertise in working with children and adults in crisis through A&E admissions and clinical assessments with the Child and Adolescent Support and Help Enhanced Response team (CASHER) and still supports the NHS in this capacity.
Niomi now takes great pride in lecturing across a range of courses within the counselling and psychotherapy team.
