Dr Stéphane Berneau
Stéphane Berneau is a scientist with research expertise in Reproductive biology. He joined UCLan in 2020 as a lecturer in Physiology and Pharmacology. His main research projects focus on expanding the knowledge about the molecular mechanism of embryo-endometrial adhesion using in-vitro models of Implantation. He also has an interest in reproductive comparative anatomy and the effects of xenobiotics and lifestyles on gametogenesis. Stéphane teaches a range of biological and physiological topics for the BSc and MSc/MRes degrees in the School of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
He is involved in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and is an active researcher.
At the University Paris Diderot in France, Stéphane has specialised in Reproductive and Developmental biology by completing a BSc with optional teaching units in Reproduction and Physiology followed by a 2-year MSc Reproduction and Development. He has been awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in the laboratory team of Prof. John Aplin and Prof. Melissa Westwood (with the co-supervision with Prof. Susan Kimber and great scientific inputs from Prof. Daniel Brison). Knowledge of molecular events at implantation remains limited, hindering further increase in clinical pregnancy success rates. With expertise in the human physiology and cell biology, he investigated the role of osteopontin and its receptors (CD44 and αvβ3 integrin) expressed in endometrial cancer cells and embryonic cells at the embryo-epithelial interface at Implantation. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Manchester Metropolitan University on the effect of lifestyle on human sperm parameters.
