Dr Anna Barlach Pritchard
Anna is a qualified dentist with 26 years' experience from working in primary and secondary care in the Lancashire region. Anna is a Senior Clinical Teacher here and is the course lead for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme and the innovative BDS - international route programme, which she has initiated and developed over the past couple of years. She has special interests in oral surgery, clinical education and training.
Anna is the BDS course lead and looks after 120 UK and 15 international students. She supports the teams involved with these programmes and is involved with all aspects of Undergraduate dental training curriculum development and delivery, including quality assurance in line with regulatory body requirements. Anna is also practicing dentistry in general practice, delivering all aspects of dental patient care and she receives referrals for minor oral surgery treatments locally.
Anna has worked here for 10 years. She is the BDS programme lead and was responsible for the clinical part time MSc course in oral surgery for 5 years before that. She has experience in all aspects of post and undergraduate dental training curriculum delivery and quality assurance.
Anna has extensive experience in HE dental programme development and has recently been in charge of the initiation and implementation of the new innovative BDS international route programme at UCLan, which saw the first overseas BDS graduates enter the GDC register in October 2023. Anna was the module lead for the Applied clinical science module on the BSc Dental studies degree for five years and she has taught basic sciences to the first year students (2nd BDS, 1 BSc DT and 1CDT) at UCLan for the past five years.
Anna has also been involved with the supervision of dissertation students on the MSc and BSc courses. Anna works in general dental practice delivering both general dentistry and minor oral surgery services and is a recognised tier 2 performer in Lancashire. Anna completed an MSc in oral surgery in 2013 and gained a distinction here.
In 2017, Anna gained her PGCert LTHE at UCLan, and she is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Anna was awarded her MFDS in 2016 at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and the MFDS Royal College of Surgeons England ad eundem. Anna is a member of both colleges and a member of the faculty of dental trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. Anna has clinical training in dental implantology and intravenous sedation and has completed the Royal College of Surgeons courses on CBCT imaging and reporting. In 2022, Anna completed a PhD at UCLan School of Pharmacy and biomedical Sciences. Her research is focused on the oral microbiome’s involvement in Alzheimer ’s disease and how oral bacteria affect the blood brain barrier, she is published internationally in these subjects.

Anna is currently undertaking research into the potential involvement of bacteria from the mouth in Alzheimer's Disease. She works with brain tissue culture disease models.
