Dr Arun Prakash Natarajan
Arun is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He is research active and a member of the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology. He lectures postgraduate and undergraduate modules related to Engineering Materials, Surface Engineering and Advanced Tribology. Arun is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and an associate member of Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
Arun's area of research expertise includes Nanostructured materials, Tribological properties of surface modified metallic materials and advanced aero-engine materials, Tribological studies of additive manufactured parts and orthopaedic implants. Arun took the role of Academic Integrity Lead from March 2024 for M5A cluster in the School. Prior to this, he was observing various Academic Misconduct meeting with the colleagues for one year. He took the role of Academic PASS Lead from September 2022 for M5E cluster. He is actively involved in the staff wellbeing committee and attend the meetings organised by the team from September 2024.
Arun took the role of Deputy Foundation Year lead from September 2021 and timetable lead for Foundation Year. As a Deputy Foundation Year lead, he wrote two new module descriptors ERC007 – Study skills and Information Technology and ERC008 – Computer aided Design. Based on the previous year’s student feedback, periodic review of the modules was carried out and course changes were done as requested by Academic Leads. He collaborated with the Academic Quality Unit and External Examiner’s feedback to change the modules at Foundation Year and modules started running from September 2022.
As a Deputy Foundation Year lead, he initiated the Curriculum Framework Review (CFR) for Foundation Year modules and wrote two new module descriptors. He was supporting the CFR linked Quality lead role. He reviewed all the Mechanical (M5 cluster) and Aerospace module descriptor for the CFR and provided comments in relation to academic quality. He organised a tour of the our EIC facility for IMechE committee members and for IMechE members of the Northwest region – Public Engagement. He was an academic representative for the Primary Engineer Judging Panel at both our Preston and Burnley campuses.
Arun was Academic Advisor and Personal tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate students. He was leading open days and Applicant days in Preston and Burley campus for Mechanical stream. He was supporting an external funded industrial project with Dr Mathew Stables in the characterisation of the graphene material.
