Simon came to UCLan in 2008 after working for Bolton Social Services for nine years as a mental health (approved) social worker and then as a deputy team manager. He has acted as admissions lead for the last two years and has been BA Social Work Course Leader since September 2012.

Simon undertook a variety of positions and roles working with adults with mental health problems prior to his first employment as a qualified social worker. He worked as a professional advocate; a residential mental health worker; a community support and resettlement worker with homeless people; and as a group therapist. He chose to specialise in mental health social work as part of his professional social work training and maintained links with the Department of Mental Health Social Work at the University of Manchester as a practice educator for social workers and approved social workers and as a tutor on the PQ Mental Health Consolidation module before coming to work at UCLan in 2008.


Simon is currently undertaking research on 'Use of self in social work education' with colleague Amanda Taylor with a view to publication.


Simon teaches across a number of programmes in the School in the following areas: mental health law, policy and practice; psychosocial studies; social work processes, theory and interventions;interpersonal skills; and health policy and the sociology of health. He has recently delivered training with Blackpool Council on Personalisation, and to Lancashire County Council on Supervision for Mental Health Social Workers.
