John Green claims 2019 Grads in Games Core-Tec Programmer Award after winning Search for a Star Award in 2018

A computing student from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has once again scooped a top industry award.

John Green, a third-year BSc (Hons) Computer Games Development student, has won the Core-Tec Programmer Award in partnership with d3t.

This followed on from his success last year when he was named the winner of the Sumo Digital Rising Star award.

The 23-year-old, from Carlisle, said: “I was not expecting this award, I'd like to thank my friends and peers for nominating me. Furthermore, it is amazing that my work is recognised by industry professionals to be of a high quality.”

He was up against stiff competition in the Grads in Games Awards. Members of the industry judged the nominations from students and staff on who they believed deserved the awards.

The specialist awards, which are the United Kingdom’s biggest student orientated game development prizes, are created and run by Grads in Games.

Ebony Rae Green, from Grads in Games, said: “John won the award based on his final year project, he created a games engine modelled on Unity. The engine was built from scratch and could be used to build a game in, which incorporated Vulkan.

“I can say with absolute certainty he deserved the award. John is so helpful with his peers and has a bright future ahead of him.”
