Dental Hygiene and Therapy student Amy Mesilio tells us about her experience

Third year BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Therapy

"From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be involved in the field of Dentistry. I therefore read into how the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Therapy course was structured, and saw how 60% of it was integrated with the BDS Dentistry course.

The staff at UCLan are very friendly and supportive, they make a point to get to know their students and understand that the leap in to Higher Education can be overwhelming. The teaching has been amazing! The quality of the lectures reflect the supervisors and lecturers at UCLan; they are so supportive and so approachable. Not just on my course but across the University in general.

When I first began studying, I found the practical sessions very beneficial and an excellent example of what to expect in a professional setting, this is very important within these types of subjects. I also like the fact that our lectures are always delivered differently, so the course is always interesting. My independence has grown hugely since embarking on placements, and travelling out of Preston to do so. I have also gained so much confidence within myself, which has pushed me to pursue goals and travel abroad for placements too.

The way that placements are structured on this course gives you an incredible understanding of what to expect when you graduate, you are essentially ready to practice as a full-time clinician. Each Dental Education Centre gives you the opportunity to work in a fully equipped dental environment under the NHS, with your own patients, learning about the nursing role whilst gaining hands on experience with amazing senior supervisors. The supervisors are able to double check all your work and teach you further along the way, whilst the patients are in the chair. This kind of experience gives you a real understanding of dentistry, which is extremely beneficial.

"Everything about the Dental Hygiene and Therapy course is so engaging. I honestly thought this would just be an avenue into Dentistry for me, but after being out on placement and studying the subject as a whole, I could not be happier and more fulfilled by the thought of a career in Dental Therapy."

Amy Mesilio, Dental Hygiene & Therapy, BSc (Hons)

"Outside of my studies, I have been involved in playing Netball for the Students’ Union and have loved every moment of it. The training sessions and games are a great way to stay on top of your fitness, and the social events with all the teams allow you to meet many more amazing people at the University.

The staff and therapists involved are the loveliest and most supportive of people, the motivation to do well and thrive in this programme stems from all aspects of academic teaching and practical sessions. I really could not be happier.

Preston city is great! If you are a person who would rather walk than take public transport, then Preston is perfect, because everything is a short walking distance from your current location. The fact that it also has two major cities less than an hour away on train, means that when you are not up for a relaxing weekend, you always have the choice to go for a day trip. Preston really does give you the best of both worlds in that sense."
