All academy courses are designed and delivered by our team of experienced English language specialists to support the development of all learners. The courses are designed for adult learners and students must be 18 years or older prior to the start of any course, or have parental permission to attend as well as a UK based guardian.

English language support services

If English is not your first language and you are looking to improve your English language skills, the Language Academy offers two year-long modules. These modules are also open to members of the public for a fee, and students can take a module as a credit-bearing elective, or as an additional class for a discounted fee. Whichever option you choose there is no difference in the course content.

Year-long modules are available in Upper-Intermediate English (CEFR Level B2) and Advanced English (CEFR Level C1).

Two hours of class per week over the academic year. These are academic hours. Each academic hour lasts for 50 minutes.

Taught English language modules are only available for September start and you are required to enrol by the University’s enrolment deadline.

Elective (UCLan students only)

Enrol for your elective online under Student Services>Online Electives Registration or by contacting the Academic Registry by email.

Certificates

Registration and enrolment will take place online. Please register and apply online.

Members of the public must provide photographic identification (driving licence, passport, etc.) upon request.

Members of staff must provide their staff card upon request.

Elective

If you are an undergraduate studying a language as an elective, this is counted as part of your course. Therefore, there is no additional payment.

Certificate

Students taking a certificate

This is the option for postgraduate or undergraduate students with a full profile or without the option to choose an elective. The certificate is taken in addition to your main programme of study and the discounted fee is £259.

Members of the public

The full fee for all levels is £495. Those in receipt of the state pension and UCLan Alumni are entitled to a discount on the full fee. The discounted fee for 2021-22 is £259.

University staff

UCLan staff members are entitled to a discount on the full fee on completion of a staff tuition fee discount form. The discounted fee for 2021-22 is £259.

Payment of fees

Payment must be made at the start of the course. Before completing your enrolment please be sure that you do wish to pursue the course, as the following fees will apply should you withdraw from the course:

Withdrawal within 4 weeks of course start date: refund applies
Withdrawal after 4 weeks of course start date: no refund applies

English language testing

We have designed and facilitated quality language tests for the University as well as for external organisations, including Ofqual-recognised organisations.

Tests include:

General English at levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 of the CEFR);
English for Academic Purposes: UCLan B1,
Test of English Language (TELL) B2 and C1

We can also provide language tests for students who hold an offer with the University that may be subject to meeting a certain English language requirement.

These results are officially recognised and accepted by the University's Home and International Admissions teams. The language test is used to measure candidates' abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Tests normally last around 3 hours.

Test of English Language Level - eTELL

The Test of English Language Level (eTELL) is a comprehensive language exam which can be taken by students as a way of fulfilling UCLan's English language entry requirements. Available at three levels, B1, B2, and C1, this exam can be used to fulfil the requirements to most UCLan courses.

As this is an online test, you can take this either in a computer-lab at one of our many partner institutions, or in your own home.

The eTELL test consists of four sections, Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Completed online, the whole test takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes including a ten-minute break.

If you are a partner institution, it is likely that your teachers will arrange for you to take the test in a computer-lab. Other students can arrange to take the test from their own home.

After the test you will receive your results within 14 days. The result will give your score in each of the four skills as well as your overall level.

Listening

The listening section consists of 20 questions. You will listen to three recordings, which will be played twice.

Reading

The reading section consists of 30 questions.

Speaking

The speaking section consists of 4 parts. You will be asked to read a prompt and then respond. For some parts you will have time to take notes.

Writing

The writing section consists of an essay on a general topic. You must write for at least 250 words.

Commercial testing

We have extensive experience of working with external organisations to develop bespoke English languages tests; whether you need placement testing, achievement, proficiency or progress tests, we can develop a test for you. As well as expertise in large-scale assessment, we can also provide practice-based assessments for specific purposes.

We can also provide bespoke training in language assessment development. As an institution we use a range of innovative assessment methods on different language programmes and degree programmes (including presentations, seminars and simulations) so we have a great deal of expertise of large and small-scale assessment.

Our trainers are experienced TESOL practitioners who ensure that sessions are both informative and very interactional with participants learning by doing and we have the facility to follow-up programmes with online support in the form of guided tasks. We can provide courses on assessing language skills, assessment for teacher trainees and introductory courses to the area of language assessment.
