Meet our colleagues
Without a doubt, my experience at UCLan as a student and later as staff has made me more employable and given me back my confidence and self-belief.
Throughout my career I have been fully supported by colleagues and managers as an openly gay woman.
No matter what your race, gender, age, religion, disability or colour is, you are always welcomed, supported, and empowered here at UCLan.
“I am grateful to be part of such a diverse and inclusive community that values and celebrates the differences among its members. I have made friends for life here and look forward to many more years of working in this exceptional environment.”
UCLan has given me good work and life balance. Flexible working makes it easy for me to work around childcare arrangements. Colleagues are amazing here and we support and look after each other, it’s like a little family.
As a leader, I’m supported to celebrate diversity in my team. This enables me to act as an ally to all communities, especially colleagues from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
The University has a masjid that enables Muslim staff and students to pray in, which is really important to me. UCLan is a great environment to work in, everyone here is so friendly.
I always like to get involved with everything as I feel that you never stop learning. The more you learn and know, the more you can effectively support those around you.
I am an ‘openly gay man’ and staff member of the LGBTQ+ Equality and Diversity forum. I feel UCLan should empower, embrace and treat everyone equally in all ‘communities’ and I am proud to be a part of this forum group, supporting staff and students alike.
I feel very fortunate to be a part of a team who values our diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences, and also prioritises staff and student wellbeing. As a veterinary profession we need to do more in terms of equality, diversity and inclusion, and our new School of Veterinary Medicine is committed to doing our part.
Admitting you have a disability isn’t always easy, so it is pleasing to see that UCLan formally commits to embracing differences and promoting an inclusive culture though the ‘Belonging at UCLan’ strategy. I would encourage colleagues to disclose their disability and to engage in the support that is available to them.
I love the flexibility I have, to balance my work life and home life. It is a pleasure to work for UCLan, which is growing in the right direction and takes care of their employees.

We promote positive mental health at work and have a range of preventative and responsive resources to support colleagues. We use our values to promote positive working environments across our campus communities. Our leaders advocate wellbeing through interactions with colleagues. Our colleagues will act to support each other and our student community in their mental health and wellbeing.
We will:
- Provide a range of compassionate support enabling you to thrive as a colleague. This includes Occupational Health Services, Counselling, Colleague Support Service and other specialists engaged to support colleagues.
- Encourage you to take a pro-active, solution focused approach in seeking support for your mental health. This can be done through your line manager, SharePoint, the People Team and colleagues with specialist knowledge like our Mental Health Champions, Health Champions and the Mental Health First Aiders.
- Raise awareness of and eliminate stigma around poor mental health through regular initiatives and updates. We provide training and development around mental health for colleagues to help themselves and each other.
- Develop and maintain employment policies. These policies are designed to support colleagues to thrive. Policies include flexible working, absence management, anti-bullying and harassment.
- Support the University Mental Health Charter to ensure that mental health and wellbeing is a key institution wide priority.
We cannot:
- Replace or duplicate specialist healthcare or medical advice or services. Where it is reasonable, we will work alongside specialists and medical professionals to support you as a colleague.
- Provide specialist medical advice. Generalised advice and support can be given through a contracted and approved medical professional supplier, such as Occupational Health or the counselling service.
- Provide crisis support. Colleagues have access to emergency support on campus for first aid and mental health first aid. This is accessible through the SafeZone App and the wellbeing assistance button.
- Extend our services and support to family members, University contractors or volunteers.
- Provide ongoing support beyond what would be reasonably expected for an employer. There may be circumstances in which we will work with you to identify appropriate external support.
We ask and encourage you to:
- Take responsibility for your own mental wellbeing. Look out for colleagues and students. Where appropriate share your concerns with them, your manager or alternatives such as report and support.
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times.
- Actively explore the staff wellbeing and support pages on SharePoint. Familiarise yourself, and your colleagues if you have leadership responsibility, with the resources and services available to support you. Act as an advocate for the range of staff mental health support available.
- Keep up to date in your knowledge and awareness. This can be achieved through participating in development sessions, accessing resources and information sharing that will raise your awareness around mental health, enabling you to take a proactive approach for yourself or with colleagues.
- Familiarise yourself with our staff handbook. Here you can learn about our policies and guidance. Use the tools available to support you in your employment.
- Advise your manager or the People Team of any developing difficulties you may be experiencing so that you can be supported. A wellness action plan might be useful or stress risk assessment.

The University of Central Lancashire is committed to supporting people in crisis and conflict. We work closely with the Council for at-risk academics (Cara) and are proud to be part of the Cara UK Universities Network.
Cara provides urgent help to academics in immediate danger and those forced into exile. In partnership universities, Cara offers practical and financial help, and assistance to reach a place of safety. This support makes it possible for academics at risk to connect, during their period of exile, with colleagues within the wider academic and scientific communities, facilitating collaboration, enhancing skills and ending isolation, so that, when the moment comes, they are equipped to go back and help re-build their societies. In addition, we support our academic community in undertaking postgraduate study through fully funded places - this year (21/22) we funded 2 places.
The University of Central Lancashire offers sanctuary to those academics who are at risk in their own countries, and as part of the Cara Fellowship programme provides financial support, fee waivers and other support for Cara beneficiaries. Fellowships help academics in danger to escape to a safe place where they can continue their work.
For more information, please visit the Cara website or contact the Vice Chancellor’s Office.
UCLan is committed to providing a safe environment to study, work and visit, protecting children, young people and adults at risk from harm and abuse.
